How to apply

The academic subject requirements vary from one programme to another, and therefore the required material you must upload with your application also vary. Please read carefully under the programme you want to apply for.

The application deadline is 1 March at 23.59 CET

Other important dates:

  • January: The Application Portal opens mid-January.
  • March: Application deadline 1 March at 23.59 CET.
  • June: You receive an answer to your application no later than June 10.
  • August: Study start in week 35.

1. Check the admission requirements

To be able to apply for a master's programme you must have:

  • English qualifications corresponding to B-level in Denmark with a minimum of 3,0 in grade point average.
  • Danish qualifications corresponding to A-level in Denmark (only: Digital Innovation & Management, and Digital Design and Interactive Technologies).

Academic subject requirements
The master's programmes in Data Science, Computer Science, and Games Technology also have academic subject requirements. To document how you meet the requirements, you must fill out a Form of Compliance.

Please note, we have a limited number of available study places and typically, we receive a high number of applications. Thus, unfortunately each year a number of well-qualified applicants are not admitted.

2. Write application material

Statement of Purpose
All applicants to ITU's master's programmes (without legal right of admission) must submit a Statement of Purpose. Each programme has its own template with specific questions about your educational background, your knowledge of the academic field, and similar topics. You will find the Statement of Purpose template under each programme.

+ Essay for Digital Innovation & Management
You must write an essay in English within the field of digital innovation and management. The essay must be based on an article. Read more under the programme.

+ Portfolio for Games
You must prepare 3–5 descriptions of practical or analytical projects you have worked on. These may include games, essays, art, code, or design projects. Read more under the programme.

4. Check your email regularly

We check all the documents you have uploaded in your application. If we are missing any documentation from you, we will send you a message in the Application Portal no later than the end of March. You will be notified by email when there are new messages in the Application Portal. Therefore it is important that you regularly check your email and spam filter.

In April and May, your application materials will be academically evaluated by a panel of teachers from the programme you have applied to.

All communication regarding the processing of your application will take place in the Application Portal with notifications sent to the email address you provided in the application. If you wish to change your email address, please do so in the Application Portal.

5. Receive result and accept study place

You will receive the result to your application in early June (no later than June 10). The result is sent as a notification by email. The application or rejection letter is sent to you in the Application Portal. It is therefore important that you regularly check your email and spam filter.

If you are offered admission, you must either accept or decline the study place within the given deadline. The deadline is 3-5 working days after you have received the admission letter and varies from year to year. The exact date is stated in the admission letter.

If you are non EU/EEA citizen and do not have residence permit in Denmark, you must pay tuition fee.

6. Pay the tuition fee

The tuition fees is paid twice a year in advance of each semester, i.e. DKK 55,000. Please read more about being a non-EU/EEA student.
Please be aware that the tuition fee may change.

Applicants with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) will be charged tuition fees.

The following groups of students are not charged any tuition fees at the IT University of Copenhagen:

  • Students with citizenship in countries within the EU/EEA
  • Swiss citizens
  • Students on bilateral exchange programmes (e.g. Erasmus. Check with the international office at your own university)
  • US students with a Fulbright scholarship

You may be exempted from paying a tuition fee if you hold one of the following residence permits in Denmark:

  • Permanent residence permit ("Permanent opholdstilladelse")
  • Permanent residence permit in another Nordic country (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands) and you continue to live in the specific country during your studies
  • Temporary residence permit with the possibility of achieving a permanent residence permit ("Midlertidig opholdstilladelse m.m.f. varigt ophold")
  • Residence permit in as an accompanying child ("medfølgende barn")
  • Residence permit as a convention refugee incl. family members ("Opholdstilladelse som konventionsflygning", jf. udlændingelovens § 7, stk. 1, og § 8, stk. 1)
  • Residence permit as a foreigner with protection status incl. family members ("Opholdstilladelse som udlændinge med beskyttelsesstatus", jf. udlændingelovens § 7, stk. 2, og § 8, stk. 2)
  • Residence permit as a foreigner with temporary protection status incl. family members ("Opholdstilladelse som udlændinge med midlertidig beskyttelsesstatus", jf. udlændingelovens § 7, stk. 2, og § 8, stk. 2)
  • Residence permit according to the EU/EEA regulations ("EU-opholdsbekandgørelsen")
  • Residence permit under the Special Act on displaced persons from Ukraine

Documentation
If you have one of the above residence permits that may exempt you from paying tuition fee, it is very important that you upload the following documentation when you apply:

  • A scan of your residence permit letter 
  • A scan of your residence permit card (both front and back page)
  • A scan of the page in your passport showing your residence permit

Applicants who have residence permits in countries within EU/EEA but not in Denmark
If you are a non-EU citizen with permanent residence in another EU/EEA country than Denmark, you are not exempted from paying tuition fee. Only residence permits in Denmark can exempt you from paying tuition fee.

The IT University of Copenhagen offers state scholarships to three or four exceptionally talented MSc applicants (full-degree students) from outside EU and EEA every year. The scholarships will be offered to the applicants who achieve the best scores according to the criteria in our admission rules. The state scholarships consist of free tuition and partly covering of living expenses.

Applicants cannot apply for the scholarships. The IT University considers all admitted MSc students for the scholarships and informs the students chosen for the scholarships in their letter of admission.

Please note that if you receive a scholarship, you will have to follow and pass full time studies.
