Current and Annual PhD Positions at the IT University of Copenhagen
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) offers PhD positions on various topics throughout the year. You can find the current openings under vacancies on ITU’s website and follow the instructions on how to apply for each position.
Every year ITU has an annual open PhD call, where you can submit your own project proposal. The annual PhD call is announced every year in late January on ITU's website for vacancies.
How to Apply and When
Please check the respective call for the deadline of each PhD position. You must use our e-recruitment system to submit your application.
Selection Process and Timeline
HR reviews all the applications and schedules the selection process accordingly. The final decision will be made within 3-4 months after the deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.
Application for PhD enrolment
It is possible to apply only when vacant PhD positions are announced. Only applications submitted through the e-recruitment system "HR Manager" will be assessed.
Please, read the guidelines below thoroughly and observe the instructions in the e-recruitment system carefully.
The applicant must submit the following information:

Motivated application (Cover Letter).

Project Proposal (Statement of Purpose). The PhD project proposal, authored by the applicant, must include an original research question and the main goals of the proposed PhD project. The proposal should be of maximum 5 pages, however, please check the specifications in the actual call.

If the applicant works with interdisciplinary approaches, including social sciences and humanities perspectives, the statement of purpose should also include a motivated choice of theory and method and an empirical basis for the research.

The statement of purpose will be used to determine the applicant’s abilities of independent thinking, definition of original goals, and grasp of the state-of-the-art of the relevant research field. Goals and research field should match the interest and competences of the suggested ITU advisor

Documentation of Academic Degree(s) and Exam Transcripts. All documentation must be provided either in English or in Danish. If the applicant has a document in any other language, a translation in English must also be included. The translation should be done by the institution issuing the document or by a state-authorised translator. Transcripts that are not issued by an EU country must be accompanied by a grade key or an explanation of the local grading scale (in English).

If the applicant has not yet obtained a full Master’s degree, it must be documented that the applicant has completed 4 years of studies towards a Master’s degree, either by a certified document with the completed courses and grades or by an official letter from the applicant’s current university.

The IT University will assess the applicant’s level of education, and compare it to the requirements of the Danish University system.

Curriculum Vitae (CV). The CV should contain name, address, phone number, e-mail, previous and present employment, and academic background. It is allowed to register references in the CV.

List of scientific publications, if any and/or master thesis written by the applicant. If the applicant has any publications with more than one author, co-author statements must be provided. This can be in the form of a traditional co-author statement or as part of a recommendation letter, etc.

Letter(s) of Recommendation, if any. Letters of recommendation should be relevant for the assessment of the applicant’s potential as a researcher, and be written in either Danish or English. Each letter should clearly state the name of the person who has written it, contact information, and this person’s affiliation to the applicant. The IT University reserves the right to ask for verification of any copies that might be enclosed as documentation.

English Language Skills Documentation. The minimum requirement for enrolment as a PhD student is English at Danish level B (gymnasium). Normally, a university-issued MSc degree provides for the necessary English skills needed to attend and to teach courses in English, as well as reading and writing academic and technical English.
The minimum requirement is usually considered met if one of the following options for documentation can be provided:

English at minimum Danish level b (gymnasium) or;

A B.A. or MSc degree obtained on the basis of an English study programme in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or USA, or;

A B.A. or MSc degree obtained on the basis of an English study programme in an EU/EEA country or
-
One of the following English tests with a certain score:

TOEFL paper-based test result of at least 550

TOEFL iBT test result of at least 80

IELTS (academic) test result of at least 6.0

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English passed

Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English passed
