Three students from ITU have won the Danish Institute for Human Rights' Thesis Award for their thesis "The Digital Divide in Prisons". The thesis examines how the digital divide between inmates in Danish prisons and the surrounding society can be bridged.

Matthias Als and Mathias Bejlegaard Madsen have finished their MSc in Computer Science at ITU, and their master’s thesis has recently been published in a research journal. They have developed energy efficient timetables for trains that can reduce trains’ energy consumption, operating costs, and CO2 emissions without extending the passenger travel time.

Digital technologies allow us to create more targeted and personalized museum experiences, according to Marie Bryndum and Maria Muhandes, who studied Digital Design and Communication at ITU. In their thesis project, they designed a Tinder-like app that gives museum visitors easier access to information about the artworks.

Despite big advances in machine learning, making computers understand language is still a big challenge. Daniel Varab and his two classmates from Software Development trained a computer program to detect contradictions in texts – a technology that might eventually help us keep track of statements made by politicians and contradictions in the law.

Four students from ITU’s Games programme dedicated their thesis to making the Virtual Reality (VR) experience more social. The resulting game ‘Tell Me What You See’ won the award for ‘Most Innovative Newcomer’ at the game festival Play17 and took the prize as best ITU student project in 2017.

Since 2015, some Danish cancer patients have had the opportunity to receive parts of their chemotherapy treatment in their own homes. What advantages and disadvantages does this have for the patients? This was the central question posed by Cecilie Jo Nielsen and Astrid Ellen Dalsjö in their MSc thesis from Digital Design and Communication at the IT University of Copenhagen (the programme changed its name to Digital Design and Interactive Technologies in November 2017).

Inspections by the Danish Food Administration have revealed that a large share of the extra virgin olive oil for sale in Danish supermarkets actually contain an inferior product. In his thesis project from ITU, Kristoffer Just investigated whether blockchain technology can make the supply chain more transparent - for the benefit of consumers and retailers alike.

In his thesis project, ITU student Christopher Bjerre developed a software tool for use in addiction treatment. Using a combination of machine learning algorithms, the tool can predict relapse with great accuracy and thus help rehabilitation staff to prevent it from happening.
