The very first winner of the ITU Research Award is Professor Sami Brandt. He joined ITU in 2017 and became a professor last year in April.
The award committee highlights in its citation his leadership of interdisciplinary initiatives such as XTREME and MotiVerse, which demonstrate his talent for connecting cutting-edge research with practical applications in healthcare and the arts.
They also point to his strong scientific profile and industry background, noting that “Professor Brandt exemplifies the integration of academic rigour and applied innovation”. The committee adds that “his contributions are exemplary in reflecting ITU’s research environment and values regarding collaborative, interdisciplinary work and engagement with relevant stakeholders.”
Professor Sami Brandt of the IT University of Copenhagen is a distinguished scholar whose work in computer vision and machine learning has earned both academic and practical acclaim. His leadership in interdisciplinary initiatives such as XTREME and MotiVerseP showcases his ability to bridge cutting-edge research with real-world applications in healthcare and the arts.
With his excellent scientific profile combined with an industry background Professor Brandt exemplifies the integration of academic rigor and applied innovation. Professor Brandt began his academic career in Finland, earning a doctoral degree at the Helsinki University of Technology in 2002. His research there focused on imaging-geometry estimation in transmission electron microscopy to enable accurate 3D reconstruction of TEM images.
