ITU hosts triple conference on games

From August 13-17, more than 80 computer game researchers from around the world will gather at the IT University of Copenhagen for three consecutive conferences on games analysis, history and philosophy.

Under the umbrella name "Game Studies Triple Conference", ITU's Center for Computer Games Research will host no less than three consecutive games conferences in one week:

• Philosophy of Computer Games Conference 2018 (August 13-15)
• Games and Literary Theory Conference 2018 (August 15-17)
• The History of Games Conference 2018 (August 16-17)

The conferences have previously been held separately, but this year the different branches of games research will meet simultaneously, says Espen Aarseth, Professor at the IT University and co-organizer:

"The idea is to gather three different humanistic branches of the games research community in order to create a stronger connection between them. ITU is the perfect setting for such a conference, so I'm looking forward to it," he says.

80 talks in five days

Around 80 researchers will present their research during the five conference days. To name a few, American researcher Adrienne Shaw will talk about queer representation in computer games, while Pawel Grabarczyk from ITU will give a presentation of the controversial ‘loot boxes’ that can be purchased in games like Counter Strike. There will also be talks about the interplay between computer games and art history, about the debate about violence in computer games and much more.

The conferences are held under the auspices of the EU funded research project Making Sense of Games, led by Espen Aarseth.
