Types of Enrolment

Learn more about the three types of enrolment for PhD students: Employed PhD, Industrial PhD, and Independent PhD

The IT University of Copenhagen offers a PhD programme that covers a wide range of disciplines, such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Media and Social Sciences, Conceptual Design, and Creative Practice-based Computing. The PhD programme consists of three or four years of enrolment/employment, independent research, and writing a PhD dissertation based on your independent research.

There are three different types of enrolment at the IT University of Copenhagen for PhD students:

Employed PhD: This type of enrolment includes Project PhD and Institute PhD. A Project PhD is a PhD student who joins a funded research project at the IT University of Copenhagen, and works on a specific topic related to the project. An Institute PhD is a PhD student who is employed by the IT University of Copenhagen for their entire PhD studies, and joins a research group or project with other PhD students in similar fields.

Industrial PhD: This type of enrolment is for PhD students who want to combine academic research and business, and who work on a project with a company. The Industrial PhD is employed and paid by a company, and supervised by both the company and the IT University of Copenhagen.

Independent PhD: This type of enrolment is for PhD students who have the academic qualifications and the financial means to pay for their own studies. An Independent PhD student is enrolled as a tuition fee free PhD student at the IT University of Copenhagen.
