Issues During the Exam
1. Preventative measures
- Install the Zoom app on your phone before the exam so you can move to a telephone (3g/4g) network.
- Use a wired internet connection instead of WIFI if possible.
- If you use WIFI place yourself as close as possible to your router/modem.
- Make sure you have network priority and that you minimize traffic on your connection (streaming of film, music, etc.)
2. Technical troubleshooting
If WIFI/cable internet connection fails, try one or more of the following
If the camera fails
- You can log on from a secondary device (your phone) and use that as a camera while still being logged in on your computer too. Remember to move both devices between the Zoom breakout rooms. Also remember to mute one device (otherwise potential doom of feedback loop).
If audio fails
- If you use an external microphone, try disconnecting it and reconnecting it.
- If you use a built-in microphone, try connecting a headset or regular headphones.
3. Handling issues
If a student experiences issues with video but is still available to attend with audio, the examiners assess whether there is a risk of cheating or if the exam can be carried through with only audio.
If one of the examiners experiences issues with video, the exam is carried through, unless the examiner depends on video to engage in the examination.
Exam Rescheduling
If the exam Is discontinued due technical issues, you and the examiner can choose to reschedule.
The exam is stopped and rescheduled
• within the first 2/3 of the exam (see in the table below how many minutes this corresponds to for the different exam lengths) and
• if the exam cannot be rectified within a duration corresponding to 1/5 of the exam duration.
The following table serves as a rule-of-thumb to be used if the examiners are in doubt when to reschedule. Download table here.
* Same amount of time for each student - i.e. two individual exams use same amount of time as a group exam with two students
Extension of exam
If the duration of the interruption caused by technical problems corresponds to less than 1/5 of the exam (see table above), the examiner adds the time spent re-establishing communications to the exam.
Group exam
If one student in a group exam is disconnected and cannot reconnect to the meeting within a duration corresponding to 1/5 of the exam duration;
- the exam is completed for the remaining students.
- The exam is rescheduled for the student not able to connect.
The examiner arranges a new time to resume the exam, preferably on the same day.
Exam attempts
A rescheduled exam due to technical issues does not count as an exam attempt. However, if the examiners assess that the student deliberately tried to avoid attending the exam, the exam will be registered as an exam attempt.
If - despite the interruption due to technical issues - the examiners are able to soundly assess the student’s performance within the first 2/3 of the exam, the exam is concluded and counts as an exam attempt.
