    Course description
    The course is for PhD students that wants to improve their teaching competences at university level with the use of digital technologies. The course is taught in English, and the online materials and videos are in English with subtitles available both in Danish and English. Participation is free of charge.

     

    What kind of teaching can I do with digital technologies? How do I use and reflect about digital technology in my teaching? And how do digital technologies used in practice influence my students and their learning?

     

    The Teknosofikum course empowers its participants through workshops, online materials, and activities to make use of digital technology when teaching. It helps them reflect on not only the practical side of using technologies as teaching tools, but also on the ethical and critical issues relating to introducing educational technologies in teaching.

     

    In the course participants will engage in cross-institutional group discussions and exercises relating to the complex field of digital technology in teaching. The online self-study consists of over 40 topics: Online videos and activities, where the participant must choose and engage with at least 13 topics independently and in group forums and relate the content to their professional development.

     

    SPECIFICALLY for PhD students from ITU: You cannot choose topics from the ‘Digital Trends’- category (4 topics in total) as you are already expected to have knowledge in this area.

     

    After the course the participant will independently be able to create teaching experiments and plans that make use of digital technologies and reflect on the impact of these in their teaching.

     

    The course is inter-disciplinary and makes use of discussion between expertise from different fields. The last times participants primarily from ITU, UCPPH, Design School Kolding and Royal Danish Academy participated in Teknosofikum. This gives a common ground to discuss similarities and differences between teaching in all higher education. Besides PhD students, the course is also open for faculty staff; postdocs, assistant professors and associate professors.

     

    Learning Outcomes
    In participating in Teknosofikum the participant will:

    • Expand knowledge about digital educational technologies, tools, and platforms.
    • Reflect on professional changes in teaching due to digital educational technologies, tools, and platforms.
    • Apply digital technology in own teaching to support new teaching strategies.
    • Critically reflect on how different pedagogical uses of digital technologies can change the learning environment.
    • Improve their professional network in the collaboration with the other participants in Teknosofikum.

    The course does not have reading materials but is focused on workshop-based activities and online learning videos, exercises, and podcasts.

    Workshop 1 – kickoff (2 hours of preparation prior to the day: Survey and video)

    Prerequisites

    • Currently a PhD student.
    • Little to some teaching experience is expected, potentially experience as TA.
    • An interest in becoming better at teaching.

    Exam
    The participant must attend at least 2 of the 3 planned workshops and online meetings. Alternatives are given if the participant misses 1 of these meetings.

    The participant must complete at least 13 topics on the online platform of Teknosofikum.

    The participant will in the end of the course hand-in a plan for a teaching experiment they wish to conduct with the use of digital technology in an educational context and reflect on the impact of this on the teaching situation.

    Credits 
    1.5 ECTS for completing the PhD Course

    Amount of hours the student is expected to use on the course
    Workshop: 2 x 8 hours of workshops, including preparation.

    Online midway meeting: 2 hours.

    Self-study: 19.5 hours. Engaging with the online content of Teknosofikum

    Exam: 4 hours. Hand-in of a plan for conduction a teaching experiment with the use of digital technology in practice.

     

    Participants
    Participants are expected to come from ITU and other institutions. The participant has an interest in becoming better at teaching, reflected and capable of using different methods and approaches to engage students with the use of digital technology.

    We have an upper limit on 30 participants in total for this hybrid format with workshops. In the last semesters we have been between 14 to 21 participants in the hybrid format, so we expect that those interested to join in 2023 can.
