Course description: The course focuses on how faculty provide project and thesis supervision in practice, and the course is for PhD students who want a formal introduction to supervision practices. The course presents and discusses the phases, issues and roles involved in project and thesis supervision. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how they might continue to improve and develop as supervisors in an academic context. The course also touches upon legislation and regulations around master thesis projects.

Format: The course will take form as a lecture with exercises.

Course topics will cover:

• Quick reference to ITU's information to students on ITU student
• Introduction to four different supervisor roles (situated perspectives)
• Discussion of phases and issues related to supervision

Intended learning outcomes:

• Describe key concepts related to project and thesis supervision
• Analyze and compare supervisor roles
• Begin to apply regulations and theoretical concepts in own supervision of projects and thesis

Exam: A written 2-3 page assignment, consisting of a supervisor statement, a model supervision agreement, and a reflection piece on further factors of supervision practices.

Prerequisites: Any PhD student enrolled at ITU can participate
