    Course description:
    Contemporary Institutions, Contemporary Problems 
    is a 3-day course affiliated with the Horizon2020 research project GIFT. The course takes a critical look at the role of the museum in contemporary discourse, the work being done by practitioners to disrupt or otherwise alter institutional operations, and the creative practices of individuals whose work may not fit within traditional museum settings.

    The course invites artists, designers, scholars, and museum professionals to lecture on subjects including:

    • Institutional Critique and organizational change within museums
    • Discursive models for public engagement
    • Issues regarding curating and producing new media art, speculative design, or other creative practices that may clash with traditional exhibition models
    • Audiences under-served by museums and under-represented within institutional discourses

    Day 1

    1:15 pm: 15-minute student paper presentations, followed by feedback from invited lecturers

    Readings and preparation:
    The lecturers will provide readings before the course

    Prerequisites: 
    This class welcomes interdisciplinary participants researching areas including but not limited to art, art history, design, cultural heritage and preservation, sociology, ethnography and audience research.

    Exam:
    Students will be asked to submit a 2,000-3,000 word paper by November 1, 2018 in order to allow the lecturers and students to review the papers in advance of a course. Students may apply to the course by submitting an extended abstract to Miguel Sicart (miguel@itu.dk).
