Course Description:
Academia is becoming an increasingly performance-oriented culture, and publication is unquestionably a key performance indicator. This is making it more and more important to learn how to manage the writing process to produce publishable prose in a reliable and efficient manner. No less importantly, the effectiveness of our scholarly prose itself must be ensured. We must not just write more, we must become better writers.
Originally trained as a philosopher of science, Thomas spent five years as a resident writing consultant at the Copenhagen Business School, where he developed his distinctive approach to academic writing. In addition to CBS, Thomas is currently working with scholars at the University of Copenhagen and the Metropolitan University College. He is an honorary teaching fellow at the University of St Andrews, and has taught writing at the University of Leicester and the ESADE Business School.
This craft skills course helps scholars develop and improve their academic writing skills. The course consists of two seminars that aim to do away with some of the common myths about writing and introduce an alternative philosophy and tools for managing the writing process in more constructive ways. The approach focuses on the composition of individual paragraphs during well-defined writing sessions. Authors are encouraged to train their ability to write down what they know on a daily basis, rather than waiting for the magic of inspiration or the emergency of a deadline to make the words come to them.
The course consists of a two-days seminar and for those interested it is a possibility to set up an 8 weeks coaching session where participants will receive support and guidance in the practice of writing according to the newly acquired techniques.

Coaching sessions:
The coaching sessions run over an 8 weeks period where a group of maximum 10 PhD students meet for an hour once a week to talk about how their work is proceeding and how to maintain and improve the writing process. The coaching sessions are facilitated by Thomas and the times and dates will be arranged within the groups.
Registration:
The course is intended for PhD students but the two-day seminars are open for all ITU employees.

Credits:
PhD students will get 1 ECTS for attending the two-day seminar and 2 ECTS for attendance in the coaching sessions.
