Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Jørgen Staunstrup
Adjunct Professor Jørgen Staunstrup gives his Inaugural Professorial Lecture on Thursday, February 8 from 14-15.
Title:
Can men multitask? Can computers?
Abstract:
The challenges in making computers multitask in a safe way has been an underlying question throughout my career. I first encountered this issue as a high-school student in 1969 writing my first programs.
Looking back, almost all the research areas that I have worked in have touched on the challenge in one way or another. These range from chip-design, efficient database implementations, operating systems, verification, mobile app development and programming languages.
I will illustrate how the challenge of safe multitasking has surfaced in these very different areas over a period of almost 50 years. The challenge of safe multitasking is still with us, and I will show how it is currently addressed in mobile app software with millions of users connected to the same shared resources.
Do not expect deep technical details, but be prepared for a few personal anecdotes.
The lecture will be followed by an informal reception. Sign-up is not required and all are welcome.
