The Programme

The Digital Design and Interactive Technologies programme is designed for those eager to shape the future of digital technology through an exploratory and critical lens. The programme combines technology, design, and societal insights, empowering you to craft meaningful solutions.

Over the three-year bachelor's programme, you'll develop analytical approaches to technology, gaining a profound understanding of how systems, services, and products function in our society. Encouraged to pose inquisitive questions, you'll critically examine technologies: Who are the solutions developed for? What are the implications of our design choices? And what ethical considerations does the design entail?

This programme not only provides technological insights but also equips you with the skills to prototype digital solutions. Programming becomes an integral aspect of the design process, allowing you to construct powered prototypes.

A key component involves exploring existing technologies through qualitative and quantitative studies, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the digital societies.

The teaching is practice-oriented with group work. Working closely with companies, you'll solve real-world cases, honing your ability to engage and operate in professional settings.

The programme is primarily taught in Danish but includes courses conducted in English.

Are you interested in social sciences and curious about how digital technology affects people in their everyday lives? Do you enjoy playing and experimenting with new technology? Then, the Digital Design and Interactive Technologies programme could be the right path for you.

As a student, you'll be equipped with tools to scrutinize emerging technologies critically. You'll delve into creative coding, sketching, and cultivate research methods that train you to become an analytical designer.

No prior programming knowledge is required.

Group work plays a central role in the programme, so you should be motivated to collaborate with other students. The IT University has a continuous dialogue and collaboration with relevant industries and provides cases for use in classes. You will develop new methods and technical skills when learning the applied skills of digital design.

Programme Structure

The bachelor’s programme in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies is a three-year full-time study, which is divided into six semesters. Each semester includes both courses and project work. Theories and methods are taught in close connection to their practical applications. The study programme is concluded with a bachelor project.

You start with core subjects about technology, design, and societal studies and build from there to establish your critical-analytical design practice. During the programme, you'll immerse yourself in research, qualitative and quantitative methods, and develop a nuanced understanding of ethical, social, sustainable, and economic aspects of digital technology.

The electives and the bachelor's project give you an opportunity to shape your own profile. As electives you can choose between a number of courses offered at the IT University at bachelor’s level, or even take electives at a different Danish or international university.

The bachelor's project can be done in groups or individually.

Teaching

The teaching methods are a combination of lectures, group projects and exercises, where project work plays a significant part. You will learn to collaborate with other students as well as external companies and organisations. The project work and the electives give you the opportunity to study your favourite subjects in depth, thereby shaping your own individual profile.



The IT University has a close collaboration with the business community, and the programme is designed to give you the opportunity to collaborate with private companies. This means you will be able to work with current real-world challenges, and you will have an opportunity to make a network in the industry during your studies.

As a student at the IT University, you will become part of a dynamic and creative environment. You might experience that your studies become a lifestyle. After all, lectures, teaching and workshops are only half of student life.

As the programme is a joint study programme in cooperation with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in the USA,  all classes are conducted entirely in English in the 2nd year, and you will also have the opportunity to do projects in collaboration with students and teachers from Georgia Tech.

Project Example

The emphasis on a critical approach to technology is at the core of Digital Design and Interactive Technologies. Here are four examples of projects where students applied critical thinking to analyse, shape, or programme digital designs:

  • Necessary help or just noise? With a critical analysis, a student group investigates the impact of health drones on an isolated island population.
  • Is this a nice place for us? Employing an inclusive user process and a new lighting design, the students establish secure spaces for pre-teens in vulnerable residential areas.
  • What is well-being for older citizens? The students devise digital technology to inspire movement for older men and enhance the quality of life through social interaction.
  • Sensory experiences for developmentally disabled children? Addressing the needs of children requiring special sensory stimulation, the students craft sensory cushions using intelligent textiles and digital electronics.

Future

Further Education

With a bachelor in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies, you will hold the academic title of BSc (Bachelor of Science). This qualifies you to continue your studies in a master programme at the IT University or another Danish or foreign university in the areas of design, social science and technology.

You have direct access to the IT University’s master programme in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies (Danish programme), where you can specialise further within specific areas that you are interested in. You have direct access for three years after graduation, if you have completed your BSc degree after January 1, 2019 (legal right to admission). 

Moreover, you are qualified to apply for the MSc programme in Digital Innovation & Management, the MSc programme in Games (Design track), and the MSc programme in Software Design.

Career Prospects

With a bachelor’s degree in Digital Design and Interactive Technologies, you will be qualified to work in both Danish and international contexts.

The courses in the programme support and develop your competencies in subjects that are attractive on a global job market, for example, Scandinavian approaches to co-design, democratic media formats, and work organisations.

Student exchange

You have the opportunity to study a part of your programme at a university abroad. Especially the 2nd year is well-suited for an exchange stay.

This is a chance for you to further specialise your education and try working in a new environment and culture. The close collaboration with Georgia Tech provides an obvious opportunity for student exchanges, but the IT University has also exchange agreements with other universities, for example:

Admission Figures

  • Digital Design and Interactive Technologies will admit approx. 59 new students in 2025. 
  • 85 % will be distributed through quota 1 and 15 % through quota 2.
  • Indicative average mark from 2024 in quota 1: 7.0 and in 2023 in quota 1: 8.7.
