English language requirements and supplementary courses

If you hold an upper secondary school certificate from a non-EU/EEA country, you must submit test scores from an English test (except if you hold an upper secondary exam from the following English-speaking countries: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom).

The following English tests meet the English requirement:

• TOEFL paper-based test result of at least 600
• TOEFL iBT test result of:
  • New scale (from 2026): at least 5.
  • Old scale: at least 100 
• TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test result of:
  • New scale (from 2026): at least 5.
  • Old scale: at least 100.
  We do not accept “TOEFL MyBest Scores”
  
  
• IELTS Academic (including online and UKVI versions) test result of at least 7.0
  We do not accept "IELTS One Skill Retake"
   
• Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) passed
• Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with min. 185

Test results more than two years old per 5 July are not considered. Please note, time limitation does not apply to CPE and CAE.

The TOEFL code of ITU is 9015, the department code is: 99.

The IELTS does not have university codes. 

Please note: The university does not have the legal basis to grant exemptions from the English test requirement for applicants holding an upper secondary school certificate from a country outside the EU/EEA no matter the nationality of the applicant or if English has been the language of instruction.

Mathematics courses in Denmark
In Denmark supplementary courses are offered by VUC. Please note, the teaching language is typically Danish.

Niels Brock sometimes offers a supplementary course in Mathematics level B in English. Read more on the web page of Niels Brock.

Solrød Gymnasium offers English-language Cambridge International AS/A Level exams for private candidates in Mathematics, which corresponds to the Danish B (Cambridge AS level) or A level (Cambridge A level). These exams currently take place annually in November. Please enquire directly with the school for further details.

Online Mathematics courses at the University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam offers 2 online courses in Mathematics, which are accepted by ITU. Please visit the web page of the University of Amsterdam for more information.

Please note! The course levels are named the opposite of the required levels according to the Danish system. 

This means that the course Mathematics B corresponds to the Danish A leveland the course Mathematics A corresponds to the Danish B level. Please therefore ensure that you enrol in the correct course.

To meet the grade requirement of 6.0 on the Danish scale, you must achieve a final grade of at least 8.0.

International AS or A level in Mathematics
ITU accepts the International AS and A levels in Mathematics when awarded by an recognized examining body. This may be an option if you reside in a country in which AS and A levels are offered.

The International A level in Mathematics corresponds to the Danish A level.

The International AS level in Mathematics corresponds to the Danish B level.

Some institutions offer online AS and A level courses. Please ensure that the courses are accredited by a recognized examining body before enrolling.

To meet the grade requirement of 6.0 on the Danish scale, you must achieve a final grade of at least C on the AS/A level scale.

• Cambridge International
• Pearson Edexcel
• CCEA (Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessments)
• Cambridge OCR 
• AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance)
• WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee)

 

You meet the Danish level A requirement in case: 

• You have completed an upper secondary school certificate from Denmark, Sweden or Norway and passed Danish, Swedish or Norwegian
• You have completed an upper secondary school certificate from Faroe Islands and passed Faroese A
• You have completed an International Baccalaureate (IB) and passed either "Danish/Swedish/Norwegian A1, Higher/Standard Level", "Danish/Swedish/Norwegian A Literature, Higher/Standard Level" or "Danish B Higher Level". Please note, "Danish B, Standard Level" and "Danish ab initio" does not meet the Danish A requirement 
• You have graduated from a short or a medium-term higher education in Danish
• You complete a supplementary course in Danish level A. In Denmark, supplementary courses are offered by VUC.
• You have passed 'Studieprøven i Dansk' with the following results:
  • Minimum grade '02' in each of the three parts of the test: written presentation (skriftlig fremstilling), reading comprehension (læseforståelse), and oral communication (mundtlig kommunikation)
• For Global Business Informatics only: if you have passed the final exam in Danish in the primary school, or you have achieved the graduation certificate from Danes World Wide

We assess the level and grade(s) in Mathematics and English from your upper secondary school certificate and convert it into Danish levels and grades. Remember to enclose a verification form if the amount of teaching hours of 60 minutes in Mathematics and English is not stated on the diploma/transcript of record.

Please note, if you want to include Mathematics related university courses in the assessment of the specific admission requirement in Mathematics, you have to apply for an exemption before the deadline 15 March at 12.00 noon CET (see more under Exemption). Alternatively, you may also do a supplementary course (see the section 'Mathematics B and Mathematics A').

The specific admission requirement in English may be met by submitting one of the approved English tests with the required test result (see the section 'English language requirement).
