The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) India Council, a subunit of the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, aimed at increasing the level and visibility of ACM activities across India, has awarded Associate Professor of Computer Science at IT University of Copenhagen Nutan Limaye the 2023 Outstanding Contributions in Computing by a Woman (OCCW) Award.
The award recognizes women professionals who have made fundamental, innovative, and impactful contributions to the field of computing and gender-diversity, while primarily working in India. In addition to her position at ITU, Nutan Limaye is also Associate Professor at the Computer Science and Engineering Department, IIT Bombay.
Nutan Limaye has made many landmark contributions to the field of computational complexity. She has successfully proved strong lower bounds for multiple restricted models of computation, significantly improving on prior work.
“Limaye’s outstanding work is the most prestigious and challenging in a part of theoretical computer science called computational complexity – think of it as the mathematical study of the algorithmic ‘limits of computation.’ This describes our digital reality in the same way as the laws of physics describe our physical reality. And, as reality becomes increasingly digital, computational complexity is among the most important topics in science, both conceptually and practically,” says Nutan Limaye’s colleague at ITU’s Computer Science Department, Professor Thore Husfeldt.
In addition to her scholarly work, Nutan Limaye produces a podcast called Life of a Researcher which focusses on researchers and their diverse research journeys.
“I’m thrilled that we managed to attract Nutan to the algorithms group at ITU. Her scientific merits are outstanding, she’s a wonderful person to have around, and she’s an excellent colleague. I am proud to work at the same place as her,” says Thore Husfeldt.
The OCCW award carries a prize of approximately 7 700 euros and is sponsored by Google.
